SBTi Launches 1st Global Register of Certified Climate Target Experts

SBTi Introduces Expert Register to Give Teeth to Corporate Decarbonisation
Highlights
These professionals have completed a seven-part assessment that tests knowledge in areas, including greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory analysis and target modelling.
This certification will help in increasing the number of qualified experts who can guide companies through the complex process of setting science-based climate goals.

In addition to this register, SBTi has launched a new e-learning platform, SBTi Academy, to build technical capacity among sustainability professionals. Through nine hours of structured training, individuals can improve their understanding of climate science and its practical application in business.
This development comes amid rising demand for green skills, which is outpacing supply on a global scale.
Surveys note that 76% of companies identify the early stage of skills as the biggest hurdle in scaling climate action. Besides, 68% of sustainability leaders come from within their organisations rather than being recruited for their expertise, and 60% were not originally hired for roles related to sustainability.
These numbers cite a shortage of trained professionals who can manage the technical aspects of target setting.

The SBTi Academy is structured around three hubs designed for different experience levels. The Onboarding Hub gives newcomers free introductory training, which covers fundamental concepts and next steps in target setting.
In the meantime, the Practitioners’ Hub delivers advanced modules for those seeking in-depth knowledge, including detailed study of the GHG Protocol, corporate near-term targets, and corporate net-zero targets.
And, finally, the Certification Hub acts as the assessment centre for specialists. Those who complete this stage appear on the SBTi website as certified experts.
For many companies, setting science-based targets involves gathering large volumes of data and translating it into measurable actions. Although the validation process is relatively economical, the technical groundwork can be demanding.

The Academy’s structured modules aim to make this process more methodical to enable businesses to prepare accurate and science-aligned plans for emission reduction.
Tracy Wyman, Chief Impact Officer of the Science-Based Targets initiative, said: “While the appetite for science-based targets is growing, access to skills is a common barrier to target-setting.
"By providing foundational knowledge for those just setting out on their own sustainability journey and providing certification for sustainability experts already helping companies on their journeys to decarbonize, the SBTi Academy aims to bridge the skills gap to set companies up for success.”
