The UN Global Compact has launched the Rwanda Country Network, marking a new step in promoting private sector sustainability across Africa. The announcement was made during the Africa CEO Forum, where leaders from business, government, and the United Nations gathered to support responsible and inclusive economic growth.
The newly launched Rwanda Country Network will serve as a national platform to help businesses align their operations with the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles. These principles focus on human rights, labour standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption measures. The initiative also aims to help companies contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Officials said the network comes at an important time for Rwanda, which has been experiencing rapid economic growth. The platform is expected to encourage stronger governance, transparency, and long-term resilience within the country’s business sector.

The launch also introduced the governance structure for the Rwanda Country Network, including its first Board of Directors and Secretariat. The leadership team will oversee the network’s independent operations and support companies in implementing responsible business practices. The Rwanda network now joins more than 60 UN Global Compact country networks worldwide, including several across Africa.
Speaking at the event, Sanda Ojiambo said the private sector has a major role to play in driving sustainable economic growth.
She noted that Rwanda’s economic progress reflects ambition and innovation, adding that businesses must ensure growth aligns with national priorities and global sustainability goals. According to Ojiambo, the new network will help companies move beyond setting sustainability targets and focus on delivering measurable impact through stronger private sector engagement.
The network’s first phase will focus on practical implementation, partnerships with government agencies and development organizations, and measurable progress in priority Sustainable Development Goals areas.
Representing the Government of Rwanda, Prudence Sebahizi welcomed the initiative, saying it supports the country’s long-term development plans.
Sebahizi highlighted that the private sector employs nearly 90% of Rwanda’s workforce, making it a key driver of the Rwanda economy. However, he stressed that economic growth must also be responsible and sustainable. He added that industries such as mining need to adopt global sustainability standards to remain competitive in an evolving international market.
Business leaders also emphasized the importance of balancing global standards with local business realities. Monzer Ali said companies can no longer delay sustainability efforts and must make difficult decisions today to secure long-term economic and environmental stability.
Ali added that the UN Global Compact framework can help businesses transform sustainability commitments into measurable progress for Rwanda.
