Johnson Controls has released its 2026 sustainability report, showcasing how energy efficiency and decarbonization are delivering both financial and environmental gains across mission-critical industries such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and higher education.
The report highlights that the company’s technologies have helped organizations worldwide save more than $9.5 billion in energy and operating costs. These savings are being reinvested into key areas like expansion and workforce development. At the same time, the environmental impact is significant, with emissions reductions equivalent to removing nearly six million U.S. homes’ worth of carbon output.

CEO Joakim Weidemanis emphasized that performance and sustainability are deeply connected in industries where reliability is essential. He noted that energy efficiency is helping businesses unlock growth while maintaining high operational standards.
Measurable Impact Across Industries
The report points to real-world examples of how these solutions are working. At Children’s of Alabama, upgraded chillers and heat pumps reduced heating fuel use by 69%, saving around $700,000 annually. With the addition of AI-powered optimization through the OpenBlue platform, savings increased further.
In Stuttgart Münster, large-scale heat pumps are now providing climate-neutral heating to 10,000 households, cutting over 15,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions each year.
The company has also made notable progress in reducing its own footprint. It reported a 46% drop in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions since 2017 and achieved 91% carbon-free electricity usage globally. In addition, Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products have fallen by 33%, surpassing its 2030 target.
Innovation Driving Efficiency and Growth
A major focus of the report is innovation. In 2025, 77% of new product research and development was directed toward sustainability and climate-related solutions. This includes advancements in heat pumps, chillers, and digital systems designed to improve energy performance.
For example, new heat pump technologies can reduce emissions by up to 55% while lowering operating costs by 35%. High-efficiency systems under the YORK brand are exceeding regulatory standards and improving cooling performance in demanding environments like hospitals and industrial facilities.
Chief Sustainability Officer Katie McGinty noted that companies are increasingly treating energy efficiency as a key business strategy, especially as energy costs rise. She added that these solutions help reduce expenses while strengthening competitiveness.
Supporting the AI-Driven Data Center Boom
The report also highlights the company’s role in transforming data centers, which are rapidly expanding due to increasing demand for AI and cloud computing. Johnson Controls is providing advanced cooling and energy management systems that can reduce non-IT energy use by over 50% in major hubs.
