Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) manufacturers in Malaysia now have a practical guide to help them integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices into their daily operations.
Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd has launched The ESG Playbook: Practical Steps for Manufacturing SMEs, a comprehensive guide designed to support manufacturers in balancing sustainability with efficiency and growth. According to the bank, the playbook is intended to help SMEs strengthen business resilience while unlocking new opportunities.
The guide was developed in collaboration with Monash University Malaysia and Zurich Malaysia, alongside strategic partners such as the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA), Penang Green Council (PGC), and the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia Brunei (UNGCMYB). It brings together research insights and real-world examples to help SMEs move from ESG awareness to implementation.
Alliance Bank group chief executive officer Kellee Kam said ESG considerations are increasingly being recognized as a key driver of long-term business performance.

“As ESG considerations become increasingly important for businesses, we see growing recognition of its role in strengthening business resilience, managing risks and supporting long-term performance,” she said.
“For manufacturers, strong ESG adoption can drive cost efficiencies, open up new revenue or innovation opportunities, improve investor confidence, and build resilience across supply chains and regulatory environments.”
A key feature of the ESG playbook is its in-depth case studies, which highlight how Malaysian manufacturers are applying ESG principles across the manufacturing value chain. Featured companies include Hexa Food Sdn Bhd, IGL Coatings, Thumbprints Utd Sdn Bhd, and Artmatrix Technology Sdn Bhd. Their initiatives range from responsible sourcing and resource optimization to governance improvements and social impact programmes.
In addition, six other SMEs, i.e., The Green Factory, Foodabox, Fire Fighter Industry Sdn Bhd, Geomax Rubber Innovative Products Sdn Bhd, Bioloop Sdn Bhd, and Emerging EPC Sdn Bhd, are showcased for their innovative ESG efforts. Together, these examples provide practical lessons and inspiration for manufacturers looking to improve sustainability while remaining competitive.
The playbook also introduces eight ESG leadership archetypes that reflect how local manufacturers are incorporating sustainability into their operations. Drawn from research and the practices of Malaysian SMEs, these archetypes are designed to help businesses assess their ESG maturity, identify strengths, and chart clear pathways for transformation.
The launch event in Kuala Lumpur was attended by industry and sustainability leaders, including MPMA President CC Cheah, Zurich Malaysia Chief Risk Officer Teresa Wong, Monash University Malaysia President and Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, UNGCMYB Executive Director Faroze Nadar, and PGC Chief Executive Officer Josephine Tan.
