Nippon Steel and Vale Sign Decarbonization Memorandum

Nippon Steel Corporation and Vale S.A. (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; CEO: Eduardo Bartolomeo; hereinafter, “Vale”) have signed a memorandum to strengthen their relationship and discuss carbon neutral steelmaking strategies.
Based on this memorandum, Nippon Steel and Vale will engage in joint research regarding the utilization of raw materials which contribute to DRI(direct reduced iron), green mold pig iron (*1), green briquettes (*2), and other carbon neutral steelmaking processes, and will pursue the possibility of realizing these. In March of 2021, Nippon Steel announced “Nippon Steel Carbon Neutral Vision 2050,” positioning environmental issues on a global scale as a vital issue forming the foundation of business management and aiming for the consideration and execution of various measures. By constantly pursuing the world’s top technology and manufacturing capabilities, Nippon Steel will continue to contribute to social development through activities that are in line with the “Social Development Goals” (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations.
