British Airways, EcoCeres Expand SAF Partnership to Cut 198,000 Tonnes of Emissions

Takeaways
- British Airways has extended its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply agreement with EcoCeres through 2030.
- The partnership is expected to prevent around 198,000 tonnes of lifecycle carbon emissions compared with conventional jet fuel.
- The deal highlights the growing role of waste-based fuels in supporting aviation decarbonization and long-term climate goals.
British Airways has strengthened its commitment to lower-carbon air travel by extending its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply agreement with EcoCeres until the end of 2030. The move is expected to help the airline reduce its environmental impact while securing access to a key resource in the aviation industry's transition toward cleaner operations.
According to EcoCeres, the extended agreement will enable British Airways to avoid approximately 198,000 tonnes of lifecycle carbon emissions when compared with the use of the same amount of traditional fossil-based jet fuel. The company estimates that this reduction is equivalent to the emissions generated by roughly 341,000 round-trip economy-class journeys between London and New York.

The announcement comes at a time when airlines around the world are facing increasing pressure from regulators, investors, and customers to demonstrate meaningful progress toward net-zero targets. While demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel continues to rise, global supply remains limited, making long-term fuel agreements increasingly important.
EcoCeres produces its SAF using entirely waste-derived feedstocks, including used cooking oil. The company says its fuel can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 94.4% compared with conventional aviation fuel.
One of SAF’s biggest advantages is that it can be used in existing aircraft engines and airport fueling systems without requiring major upgrades. This makes it one of the most practical solutions currently available for reducing emissions from commercial aviation, particularly for long-haul flights where alternative technologies remain years away from large-scale deployment.
Matti Lievonen, Chief Executive Officer of EcoCeres, said the extended partnership reflects both companies’ shared commitment to advancing practical solutions for aviation decarbonization. He added that the company remains focused on increasing the availability of waste-based fuel and supporting customers in achieving their emissions-reduction objectives.
For British Airways, the agreement provides greater certainty over future fuel supply in a market that is still developing. As governments introduce new climate policies and SAF mandates, airlines are increasingly looking to secure reliable access to lower-carbon fuels to meet compliance requirements and reduce transition risks.
Industry experts view long-term supply contracts as critical for accelerating the growth of the SAF market. Such agreements provide producers with confidence to invest in additional production capacity while helping airlines manage procurement costs and sustainability commitments.
The deal also reflects the growing importance of international collaboration in building sustainable aviation supply chains. From sourcing feedstocks to producing fuel and supplying airlines, the SAF ecosystem depends on partnerships that extend across borders.

As the aviation sector works toward ambitious climate goals, agreements such as this demonstrate how Sustainable Aviation Fuel is evolving from a niche sustainability initiative into a strategic business priority. For British Airways and EcoCeres, the extended partnership represents another step toward scaling practical solutions for carbon emissions reduction and advancing the broader transition to Sustainable Aviation before the end of the decade.
