Certifications Lead Procurement Decisions

Industry experts say third-party standards are becoming the foundation of smarter buying.

Tim Colgan, technical director at Bjelin in the U.S., recommends looking for trusted certifications such as FSC-certified wood, GREENGUARD Gold, and credits tied to LEED certification. These help ensure responsible forestry practices and low chemical emissions.

Other best practices include reviewing low-VOC flooring labels for improved indoor air quality and transparency tools such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs), which support ESG reporting.

Signature Flooring, for instance, publishes lifecycle assessments and tests products against Green Label Plus and FloorScore standards to minimize emissions and create healthier indoor environments.

Durability Drives Return on Investment

Beyond environmental benefits, many owners are finding that sustainable flooring also delivers better financial performance.

Law noted that longer lifespans, lower maintenance needs, and fewer replacement cycles translate into a stronger total cost of ownership. “For many of our hospitality customers, the conversation has shifted from ‘What’s the cheapest square yard today?’ to ‘What’s the smartest lifecycle investment for this asset?’ ” she said.

Products like Woodura hardened wood flooring illustrate this trend. Made from FSC-certified European wood, the technology uses less raw lumber while increasing surface strength. The result is a more dent- and water-resistant floor suited for high-traffic hotel spaces. Modular locking systems also allow damaged planks to be replaced quickly, minimizing downtime and lost room revenue.

Circular Future for Commercial Flooring

Looking ahead, manufacturers are embracing circular economy practices, including recyclable materials, adhesive-free installations, and clearer end-of-life pathways. Signature participates in the Carpet Recovery America Effort (CARE) to reduce landfill waste.

Lower embodied carbon, smarter data-driven design tools, and multi-functional performance, such as acoustic control, wellness benefits, and easy maintenance, are also shaping the next generation of commercial flooring.
