Cologne-based startup Sunhat, which helps enterprises automatically validate and share ESG and compliance data, has secured €9.2 million in Series A funding. The round was led by CommerzVentures, with participation from Capnamic, EnBW New Ventures, xdeck, and WEPA Ventures.
Founded in 2022 by Lukas Vogt (CEO), Alexander Behr (CPO), and Ali Kamalizade (CTO), Sunhat has grown rapidly, serving thousands of users in more than 20 countries. Customers include EnBW, Ingredion, Grundfos, and Geberit. Over the past 15 months, the company reported 10x growth and now aims for another 10x increase by reaching 500 major enterprises across Europe and North America.
Solving the “Proof Gap”
“Enterprises don’t have a sustainability problem, they have a proof problem,” said Vogt. While companies may meet standards and achieve sustainability goals, the “proof gap, which is ”the time spent finding and presenting documentation, creates costly delays. Research shows employees spend up to 360 hours annually searching for records, highlighting inefficiencies that can derail business deals.
Sunhat’s platform, powered by Proof AI, is designed to fix this. The AI engine maps compliance requirements to verified company data and ensures records stay current. It draws on thousands of past audits and questionnaires to understand what qualifies as valid proof across frameworks like ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, CSRD, and CDP.

Faster Proof, Bigger Advantage
Large enterprises face thousands of proof requests monthly, from supply chain verification to ESG disclosures. Traditional systems often fail to keep up, leaving companies vulnerable to missed opportunities.
“Too many companies lose deals just because they can’t move fast enough,” said Paul Morgenthaler, Managing Partner at CommerzVentures. “We backed Sunhat because it turns that pain into an advantage. Proof AI knows what proof is needed and has it ready, so teams can respond instantly and confidently. That speed wins business.”
Proof AI integrates with systems such as SharePoint and ESG or EHS tools, continuously scanning for updates, verifying accuracy, and flagging expiring records. This automation allows companies to respond quickly to complex questionnaires, certifications, and audits.
Scaling Up with New Funding
With the new investment, Sunhat plans to:
- Expand Proof AI beyond ESG to cover compliance with 100+ global standards.
- Double its team over the next year.
- Grow its ecosystem with 20 new integration partners across enterprise, ESG, and finance.
For customers like Ingredion, the platform has already proven its worth. “Someone on our commercial team sent us a very lengthy customer sustainability questionnaire, indicating that they needed it back in 48 hours to submit as part of the bid process for new business. We didn’t want to miss the deadline, as this was an opportunity to expand business with this customer. Previously, this would have been a challenging timeline for my team. But with Sunhat, we were able to complete the questionnaire in a few hours and have the confidence to know that our responses were accurate, as we had already verified them in the platform,” said Brian Nash, VP of Corporate Sustainability at Ingredion.
