Petra Funds Group and MSCI Introduce PeerView to Improve ESG Benchmarking for Private Markets

Takeaways
- Petra Funds Group has partnered with MSCI to launch PeerView, a benchmarking solution that brings institutional-grade ESG and climate data to private market managers.
- The platform helps mid-market general partners (GPs) compare ESG performance using the same benchmarks that limited partners (LPs) often rely on for investment decisions.
- PeerView is designed to strengthen ESG reporting by adding benchmarking and peer comparisons while supporting existing reporting frameworks.
Petra Funds Group has announced a strategic collaboration with MSCI to introduce PeerView, a new solution designed to improve ESG benchmarking for private market investment managers. The partnership aims to make advanced sustainability and climate data more accessible to mid-market firms, helping them better understand how investors assess their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.
The new offering combines Petra's ESG reporting services with MSCI's sustainability and climate datasets, giving private market managers access to information that has traditionally been available mainly to larger investment firms and institutional investors.
As ESG factors continue to influence investment decisions, limited partners (LPs) are increasingly evaluating private market funds against public market ESG benchmarks. However, many mid-sized general partners (GPs) have had limited visibility into the data and reference points used during these assessments. PeerView is intended to close that information gap by providing benchmarking tools built around the same standards often used by investors.

Through the platform, Petra's clients will be able to access a wide range of MSCI datasets, including ESG metrics, climate and emissions benchmarks, and MSCI Controversies data. These insights will allow firms to compare the non-financial performance of their portfolio companies against carefully selected public market peer groups.
The companies say this approach will improve transparency during investor discussions while helping firms present ESG performance with stronger data-backed evidence. Instead of relying mainly on descriptive sustainability reports, managers can support their disclosures with measurable comparisons and benchmarked results.
Importantly, PeerView is not intended to replace existing ESG reporting standards or sustainability frameworks. Instead, it is designed to complement them by providing additional context through peer comparisons and performance benchmarks. Petra will also work with clients to help interpret the data in a way that reflects the unique characteristics of private market investments, where information availability and operating models often differ from public companies.
Charlie Chipchase, Managing Director of Petra Funds Group, said private market managers are increasingly being judged using public market ESG standards without always knowing which benchmarks investors are applying. He described Petra as the operating platform and MSCI as the intelligence layer powering the data, adding that PeerView enables firms to better understand investor expectations and strengthen ESG reporting with objective performance comparisons rather than narrative alone.
Beth Byington, Head of Americas Sustainability and Climate at MSCI, said many mid-market investment managers are trying to meet growing sustainability expectations from investors without having access to the same data those investors use. She noted that integrating MSCI's sustainability and climate datasets into a platform designed specifically for private markets provides managers with a more consistent and credible basis for communicating ESG performance.

The launch reflects the broader trend of investors demanding greater transparency and standardized ESG information across private markets. By bringing institutional-quality benchmarking to a wider group of fund managers, Petra Funds Group and MSCI aim to improve comparability, support more informed investment decisions, and strengthen engagement between GPs and LPs.
