Ballard Acquisition of GeoPura Boosts Green Hydrogen Power Business

Takeaways
- Ballard acquires GeoPura in a deal worth £301 million, strengthening its position in the growing green hydrogen market.
- The acquisition combines hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen production, logistics, and power generation into one integrated business.
- The move allows Ballard to expand beyond transport into industries seeking reliable zero-emission power, including data centres and construction.
Canadian hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer Ballard has announced the acquisition of U.K.-based GeoPura, a company known for delivering green hydrogen power solutions. The deal, valued at £301 million (about US$397 million), marks a major step in Ballard's strategy to become a fully integrated hydrogen ecosystem provider.
The agreement also includes the possibility of an additional £27.5 million payment if GeoPura reaches certain financial targets in the future.
Founded in 2019, GeoPura develops systems that combine hydrogen production, storage, and fuel cell technology to deliver clean electricity. Its Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs) use renewable hydrogen to generate zero-emission power, offering an alternative to diesel generators for temporary worksites, backup power, off-grid operations, and grid support.

The company's technology is already being used across sectors such as construction, film and television production, live events, transport, healthcare and defence. GeoPura is also targeting the fast-growing data centre market, where demand for reliable and sustainable backup power continues to increase.
The acquisition builds on an existing partnership between the two companies. Ballard has long supplied the hydrogen fuel cells that power GeoPura's HPUs, making the latest deal a natural extension of their collaboration.
With the acquisition complete, Ballard plans to broaden its business beyond manufacturing fuel cells. By combining GeoPura's expertise in hydrogen production, transportation, and logistics with its own fuel cell technology, the company aims to offer customers a complete energy-as-a-service solution.
The integrated offering will cover hydrogen production, fuel distribution, logistics, refuelling infrastructure, fuel cells, and stationary power generation, providing customers with a single provider for clean energy needs.
Ballard President and Chief Executive Officer Marty Neese described the acquisition as a significant milestone for the company. He said bringing together Ballard's fuel cell technology with GeoPura's service-based business model creates a stronger platform to meet growing global demand for dependable, low-noise, and emissions-free power solutions.
Neese added that the combined company is well-positioned to support industries looking for greater energy resilience while advancing the global transition to cleaner energy sources.
For GeoPura, the transaction also strengthens a partnership that has already delivered successful hydrogen-powered systems. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Cunningham said Ballard's engineering expertise and fuel cell capabilities have played an important role in the company's growth.
The companies believe the acquisition will significantly expand Ballard's addressable market. While the company has traditionally focused on mobility applications, the addition of GeoPura opens opportunities in high-growth sectors where stationary hydrogen power is becoming critical infrastructure.
