Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund Supports Pantheon’s Carbon Removal Projects

Takeaways
- Microsoft has invested in Pantheon Regeneration to scale nature-based carbon removal and ecological restoration projects.
- The funding will accelerate Pantheon’s pipeline, starting with one of the U.S.’s first commercial peatland restoration projects.
- The deal supports Microsoft’s wider carbon removal strategy as it aims to deploy scalable, high-integrity climate solutions.
Pantheon Regeneration, a fast-growing player in the nature-based carbon removal space, has secured a new investment from the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. The funding will help Pantheon expand its portfolio of ecosystem restoration projects designed to revive biodiversity and remove carbon from the atmosphere.
Founded in 2023, Pantheon develops, finances, and manages projects that reduce and remove greenhouse gas emissions while restoring natural ecosystems. The company’s first major initiative, the Pocosin Ecological Reserve I (PER I), is among the first commercial peatland restoration projects in the United States. Peatlands are considered one of the most powerful natural climate solutions due to their high carbon density.
According to Pantheon, peatlands can shift from being long-term carbon sinks to significant carbon sources when they are drained. As soils dry and oxidize, they release large volumes of CO2. Restoring these landscapes by re-wetting them prevents further emissions and allows the peatlands to function once again as carbon sinks, drawing down atmospheric carbon and generating high-quality carbon removal credits.

Beyond reducing emissions, Pantheon’s restoration work delivers substantial biodiversity benefits. Re-wetted peatlands support vital wetlands, protect habitats for wildlife, and enhance water quality, key environmental co-benefits that strengthen the value of the projects.
Pantheon CEO Tripp Wall said the backing from Microsoft marks a major milestone for the company.“Support from the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund is a profound game-changer,” Wall said. “The Pantheon team has been driven from day one by the enormous potential of our ecosystem restoration work to deliver the type of landscape scale climate solutions the planet needs and the carbon credit quality and volumes the market craves.”
For Microsoft, the investment aligns with its broader climate strategy. The company is the world’s largest corporate buyer of carbon removal, with purchases approaching 31 million tonnes. Since launching the Climate Innovation Fund in 2020 as a $1 billion commitment, Microsoft has supported emerging technologies and nature-based carbon removal projects capable of scaling to meet global climate goals.
Erika Basham, Director of the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund, said Pantheon’s model reflects the type of high-integrity solutions the company seeks to back.
“We’re thrilled to support Pantheon Regeneration’s mission to restore ecosystems and remove carbon from the atmosphere,” she said. “Their innovative approach aligns with our goal to invest in scalable, science-based solutions that not only remove emissions but also deliver co-benefits such as biodiversity and water impacts. This investment underscores our focus on supporting scalable, high-integrity climate solutions and the innovative teams that deliver them.”
