- Electrified logistics, workforce training, and responsible AI are central to Amazon's long-term sustainability strategy.
Amazon is strengthening its commitment to sustainability by combining investments in technology, workforce development, and clean infrastructure. In its 2025 Sustainability Report, the company outlines how artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and renewable energy are helping lower emissions while preparing millions of people for the jobs of the future.
A major highlight of the report is Amazon's Future Ready 2030 initiative, a US$2.5 billion commitment designed to help at least 50 million people gain the skills needed for a changing economy. The program reflects the company's belief that technological progress and workforce development must move together to support sustainable growth.
AI and cloud technologies are playing an increasingly important role across Amazon's operations. The company uses these tools to improve packaging, optimize delivery routes, monitor facilities, detect equipment issues, and enhance waste management. These applications help reduce energy use, improve operational efficiency, and lower carbon emissions.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) also continues to support organizations seeking more energy-efficient computing solutions. By moving workloads to cloud infrastructure, businesses can reduce energy consumption compared with many traditional on-site data centres while advancing their digital transformation efforts. The company has also expanded access to AI education through its Social Entrepreneur Accelerator, providing cloud and AI training to more than 100 organizations across 34 countries. In addition, Amazon has distributed US$17.9 million worth of AWS cloud and AI technology to strengthen education and digital skills development.
Speaking about the initiative, Kara Hurst, Amazon's Chief Sustainability Officer, said the company is investing not only in AI but also in the people and communities that will benefit from the technology. She noted that Future Ready 2030 includes programs ranging from employee tuition support and career certifications to free AI training and computer science education for learners at different stages of their careers.
Amazon has already made significant progress in workforce development. Its AWS re/Start program has trained more than 14,400 unemployed and underemployed individuals through a 12-week cloud skills course. The company has also exceeded its earlier goal of helping 300,000 U.S. employees gain new skills by 2025. Since 2019, around 599,000 U.S. employees and more than 980,000 employees worldwide have participated in Amazon's upskilling initiatives.
The report also highlights improvements in sustainable data centres, which are becoming increasingly important as AI adoption grows. Amazon's facilities use advanced liquid-to-chip cooling systems, renewable energy, and water-saving technologies. In 2025, its global Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) reached 1.14, performing better than the public cloud industry average.
Beyond digital infrastructure, Amazon continues to expand its low-carbon logistics network. The company now operates more than 52,700 electric delivery vans worldwide, delivering 2.4 billion packages in 2025. It has also built more than 50,500 EV charging points across 380 U.S. delivery stations while expanding electric trucks, cargo bikes, AI-powered route optimization, and alternative fuels where full electrification is not yet practical.
