The Professional Publishers Association (PPA) has launched a new Emissions Calculator to help publishing companies measure and reduce their carbon footprint.
The PPA Sustainability Action Group's advice influenced the tool's design, which was created with RISE and support from Pensord. Because of its simplicity and lack of technical terms, it is suitable for publishers who are just starting out with emissions reduction.
On one hand, publishers can measure emissions linked to electricity use, business travel, professional services, office waste, commuting, and supply chain activities.

The calculator provides a wide framework for reporting and covers operations in print, digital, and events. The tool also gives organisations a clear roadmap to manage and reduce their emissions, along with customised guidance and an audit-ready summary report.
On the other hand, the calculator gives advertisers more visibility into their media partners' sustainability credentials. Because of this consistency, agencies and advertisers can make well-informed decisions about their investments and guarantee that they are in line with their own climate pledges.
Sajeeda Merali, CEO, the PPA, said: “Our industry is united in its commitment to a more sustainable future, and the PPA Emissions Calculator is a key step forward. Designed to be simple and accessible for publishers of all sizes, it empowers members to measure and manage their carbon impact with confidence.
“By providing a credible, standardised approach to reporting, the calculator not only supports our journey to Net Zero but also gives advertisers the transparency they need when partnering with trusted editorial brands.”

On the whole, by putting publishers and advertisers on a more level playing field, this calculator encourages the industry to work together to create a sustainable future.
