Wakefield Council has voted to scrap a series of climate commitments, marking a major shift in the authority's environmental strategy. Cabinet members from the Reform-led administration approved plans to remove the council's climate pledges, abandon its carbon-neutral authority target for 2030, and reduce the climate change budget by £170,000.

The move overturns climate change and biodiversity declarations adopted in 2019 under the previous Labor administration. Those commitments included becoming a carbon-neutral authority by 2030 and achieving net zero across the wider district by 2038.

Council leader Karl Johnson said the decision should not be viewed as a rejection of climate science. Instead, he said the authority intends to direct its resources toward practical projects that can deliver measurable benefits for local communities.

According to the new policy, the council believes the previous climate targets were unrealistic and no longer appropriate. As part of the changes, it will remove its published climate change action plan and discontinue the role of the elected climate change champion.

The authority has also agreed to withdraw from the Wakefield Net Zero Partnership, a network that brings together businesses, community organizations, and public bodies to exchange ideas and promote sustainability. In addition, the council will end its participation in the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission's climate action pledge.

Several communication initiatives will also be discontinued. The council's climate change newsletter and related social media channels are expected to be retired as part of the restructuring.

While scaling back its climate programmes, Wakefield Council said it will continue to pursue environmental improvements through other areas of its operations. Planned measures include improving the energy efficiency of more than 1,600 council-owned properties, supporting residents and businesses in reducing energy consumption, increasing recycling rates, and maintaining over 600 green spaces across the district.

Council documents presented during the meeting noted that the policy changes could have workforce implications. Any staffing impacts will be considered through formal consultation with trade unions before further decisions are made.

The decision has attracted criticism from environmental campaigners. Members of Just Transition Wakefield gathered outside Wakefield Town Hall ahead of the cabinet meeting to oppose the proposals.

Group spokesperson Catherine Porritt argued that the changes weaken the council's ability to address climate challenges. She said removing dedicated climate expertise and embedding responsibilities within different departments could reduce the focus and resources needed to maintain effective climate action. According to the group, eliminating specialist roles and public-facing programs risks slowing progress on environmental initiatives rather than strengthening them.
