Sweden Becomes World's First Nation to Set Consumption-based Emissions Target
Sweden has become the first country to set targets to reduce consumption-based emissions. The committee formed to achieve Sweden's environmental goals has recently presented proposals for what goals Sweden should set for greenhouse gas emissions linked to the country's consumption.
The political parties in Sweden have unanimously extended their support to the new proposals. The country has set a target to achieve net-zero by 2045.
Emma Nohrén, chair of the climate goals committee, said: "No other country in the world has done what we have done. There has been a pioneering spirit.”
The Swedish government said the environmental committee suggested setting targets for the climate impact of its exports, including emissions from cargo ships and flights, in its national climate goals and looking at including emissions from internal flights in its domestic operation by 2030.
The committee also has proposals for the public sector that emissions from goods and services ordered by it should decrease faster than those of the rest of the country.
