Topsoe, a pioneer in carbon emission reduction technologies, has chosen AVEVA, a well-known industrial software provider that is driving digital transformation and sustainability.

This collaboration aims to accelerate the development of decarbonisation solutions, particularly for the production of green hydrogen and other carbon-neutral fuels. Topsoe will leverage AVEVA Process Simulation to model their Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOECs) and optimise their design and control strategy.

The global achievement of NetZero targets necessitates the rapid decarbonisation of all industries. However, certain sectors, known as the hard-to-abate sectors, pose challenges in terms of electrification.

These industries include heavy transportation, such as shipping and aviation, as well as carbon-intensive sectors like steel manufacturing and petrochemical production.

The key challenge lies in replacing fossil fuels with carbon-free alternatives. This is where Topsoe can make a difference. By utilising their highly efficient SOEC-based electrolysers, it becomes possible to produce the green hydrogen required to decarbonise these carbon-intensive industries.

Time is of the essence, and AVEVA Process Simulation plays a crucial role by enabling Topsoe engineers to design and optimise their electrolysers more swiftly and efficiently through its flexibility, open modelling, and user-friendly interface.

Poul Georg Moses, Chief Technology Officer in Power-to-X at Topsoe, expressed, "Green hydrogen is essential for decarbonising industries that cannot be easily electrified, and there is no time to waste if we’re to succeed in achieving global NetZero targets.

Topsoe is already leading the way by building the world’s largest SOEC electrolyser manufacturing facility, enabling us to deliver green hydrogen technologies and Power-to-X solutions at an industrial scale. The AVEVA Process Simulation software is a game-changer for us. With its dynamic simulations, we are removing bottlenecks and speeding up the development of our solutions."

Tobias Scheele, Senior Vice President of Products at AVEVA, stated, "We are delighted to deepen our longstanding partnership with Topsoe as the Power-to-X industry evolves. The successful energy transition relies on industries' ability to rapidly deliver low-carbon solutions on a large scale. AVEVA Process Simulation was designed to accelerate the engineering cycle, enabling fast execution of innovations and immediate carbon reductions."

Topsoe has been an AVEVA customer for years, utilising AVEVA PRO/II Simulation and AVEVA Dynamic Simulation. As the Denmark-based company embraces AVEVA Process Simulation, their engineers gain the ability to design sustainable solutions in response to the growing demand for green energy products driven by the global shift towards net-zero emissions.

Lisa Wee, Global Head of Sustainability at AVEVA, affirmed, "AVEVA is dedicated to collaborating with our customers to create a more sustainable and equitable future through technology. We recognise that the choices and actions made by global industries in this decade will have far-reaching consequences. We are thrilled to contribute to accelerating the energy transition by combining our software with Topsoe's innovative technology."

According to the International Energy Agency, as of 2021, the global electrolyser manufacturing capacity is insufficient to meet net-zero requirements. Currently, alkaline and proton exchange membrane electrolysers dominate production, with electrolysis accounting for less than 0.1% of today's hydrogen production.

With the increasing availability of renewable energy at reduced costs, Topsoe's ultra-high-efficiency SOEC electrolysers play a crucial role in maximising the delivery of clean hydrogen. These units yield up to 30% more hydrogen from the same electricity volume while reducing costs by 30%.
