Bentley Systems Cuts Infrastructure Carbon Footprints

By 2050, half of the world's carbon emissions will be from infrastructure projects.
Bentley's tool automates data collection and generates one-click carbon reports.
Bentley Systems, an American software development company, has launched new Carbon Analysis features in its iTwin Experience software.
Using the company's new capabilities, Engineers can now assess and reduce the carbon footprint of their infrastructure projects.
Embodied Carbon
Embodied carbon refers to the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere during a project's construction, from raw material extraction to factory production. Tracking this has become easier with the launch of Bentley's new feature, which measures carbon from start to finish.
Why is it Important?
Savina Carluccio, executive director of the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI), says that half of the world's carbon emissions by 2050 will come from new infrastructure before it is even used. With this in mind, the sector needs to double down on its carbon reduction efforts, and innovative digital tools like Bentley’s can help address this issue by suggesting the best materials and designs.
Bentley’s Carbon Analysis
The tool gathers insights and data from design files and provides a detailed view of the materials being used. With just a click, users can generate a carbon report that is updated in real-time as the design changes. Carbon impacts will be displayed using colour-coded heat maps through a live 3D digital twin model, allowing users to explore sustainable design and material alternatives in minutes.
“Carbon assessments should be standard practice for global infrastructure projects, but creating carbon reports isn’t easy,” said Chris Bradshaw, chief sustainability officer, Bentley Systems. “Using Bentley’s new Carbon Analysis capabilities helps transform the tedious task of carbon reporting into a smooth, automated process—providing infrastructure professionals with greater visibility into carbon impacts and helping them design sustainable infrastructure faster and more easily.”
Bentley's new capabilities are the need of the hour and make it easier for engineers to understand how their decisions and design choices affect carbon emissions and swiftly make adjustments to create more environmentally friendly infrastructure projects.
