Why ESG Leadership in Manufacturing Is Becoming a Business Advantage

Takeaways
- ESG leadership in manufacturing is no longer about compliance; it is a source of cost savings, resilience, and competitive advantage.
- Companies that act on supply chains, circularity, social standards, and digitalization are better positioned to meet rising regulatory and market demands.
- Strong ESG strategies can improve ratings, cut costs, and build long-term trust with investors, customers, and employees.
Sustainability in manufacturing has moved far beyond box-ticking. Today, it is a strategic journey that shapes innovation, resilience, and measurable impact, according to Zuzana Struharova and Anna Ma of Nexio Projects.
“The sector faces escalating environmental pressures alongside social and regulatory demands,” Struharova explains.
Drawing on their work with global clients, the consultants point to four ESG trends that are reshaping how manufacturers create value.
Looking Beyond the Factory Gate
Manufacturing is resource- and energy-intensive, but the biggest climate impacts often sit outside company walls. Scope 3 emissions, largely from suppliers and raw materials, are, on average, 26 times higher than direct emissions.
Ma notes that in manufacturing, 70% to 90% of Scope 3 emissions typically come from purchased goods and services. Companies that invest in strong Scope 3 measurement are not just meeting disclosure demands; they are unlocking supply chain resilience and cost efficiencies. Supplier engagement, co-financing decarbonization projects, and better data sharing can all deliver financial and performance gains.
One recent ESG gap analysis led by Nexio Projects helped a client significantly improve its EcoVadis score, highlighting how structured ESG governance can strengthen transparency and competitiveness.

Redefining Resources and Waste Through Circularity
Circular economy models are becoming central to sustainable manufacturing. By designing products for durability, repair, and recyclability, companies can cut material use and reduce waste.
European initiatives such as the Circular Economy Action Plan and the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation are pushing manufacturers to rethink product design. But the benefits go beyond compliance. A 2024 Nexio Projects survey found that companies implementing circular practices achieved average raw material cost reductions of 20%, alongside an 18% increase in customer loyalty linked to sustainable products.
These gains show how circularity can directly support margins while future-proofing product portfolios.
Strengthening Ethical and Labour Standards
ESG leadership is not only environmental. “Manufacturers must also reinforce employee safety and well-being, prioritizing rigorous health and safety protocols,” Struharova says. Strong health and safety practices reduce operational risk and improve reputation.
Ma adds that fair labour practices, respect for human rights, and diversity and inclusion across the value chain are increasingly material. Manufacturers with robust social governance report 23% higher employee retention and fewer labor disputes, an advantage in a sector facing skills shortages and reputational scrutiny.
Using Digitalization to Accelerate ESG Progress
Digital tools are emerging as powerful enablers of ESG performance. Advanced data systems and modelling tools help manufacturers track emissions, improve reporting accuracy, and identify efficiency gains.
According to Struharova, 65% of manufacturers investing in digital sustainability solutions report faster progress towards ESG goals. Nexio Projects recently supported a global food supplier with a detailed product carbon footprint framework, giving the client confidence to report emissions and accelerate decarbonization.
