eBay Net Zero 2045 Target Signals Stronger Climate Governance

Takeaways
- eBay has set a net-zero emissions target for 2045, backed by a Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)– validated climate transition plan.
- Shipping and logistics account for 84% of eBay’s Scope 3 emissions, making partnerships and low-carbon delivery central to future cuts.
- Circular commerce, including resale and reuse, is positioned as a key lever for reducing emissions across the value chain.
eBay has published its first climate transition plan, committing the global e-commerce platform to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. The plan has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, aligning eBay’s climate strategy with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
The company said the plan lays out how it intends to reduce emissions across its own operations, logistics network, and broader supply chain. Validation by SBTi places eBay among a growing group of digital retailers seeking external assurance that their climate targets are grounded in climate science.
Renewable Power and Early Progress
A key foundation of eBay’s strategy has been its shift to renewable electricity. The company reached its target of powering all facilities with 100% renewable energy in 2024, a year ahead of its original 2025 goal. As a result, operational emissions have fallen 92% compared with 2019 levels, driven largely by cleaner power for data centers and offices.
Transportation emissions, which eBay tracks separately, have also declined. The company reported a 21% reduction so far toward a 2030 goal of cutting transport-related emissions by 27.5%.
Chief Sustainability Officer Renee Morin told Reuters that the company’s climate strategy is designed to remain anchored in science. She said alignment with the 1.5°C pathway has become a benchmark for investors assessing corporate climate performance.

Shipping Remains the Biggest Challenge
Despite early gains, shipping remains the hardest part of eBay’s decarbonization journey. The company disclosed that shipping accounts for 84% of its Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions from logistics partners, suppliers, and customer delivery.
To address this, eBay is working with carriers to promote local pickup options, shift some routes from air to road, and test consolidated delivery models. It is also exploring localized resale markets to reduce long-distance shipping.
Circular Commerce as a Climate Lever
The transition plan places strong emphasis on circular business models. By encouraging consumers to buy and sell pre-owned products, eBay aims to cut emissions linked to manufacturing new goods. Company executives argue that resale can scale into a mainstream climate solution, while analysts note that product life extension is increasingly visible in sustainability disclosures.
Competitive and Investor Context
SBTi validation allows investors to compare eBay’s progress with peers. Amazon has pledged to reach carbon neutrality by 2040, while Alibaba has committed to carbon neutrality by the end of this decade. Investors say such comparisons are driving higher expectations for transparency, interim milestones, and Scope 3 reporting aligned with frameworks such as the International Sustainability Standards Board.
