British Columbia (B.C.) has published its Zero-Emission Vehicle Update 2024 report, highlighting over a decade of progress in adopting zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).

The province has invested over $650 million to support greener transportation alternatives, which has increased its ZEV ownership from just 5,000 in 2016 to about 195,000 ZEVs on the road today.

To reinforce this enormous growth, B.C. has developed one of the largest public charging networks in Canada, with more than 7,000 charging stations. This includes the completion of B.C.’s Electric Highway in 2024, a network of fast-charging stations built along all highways and roads to make long-distance travel more convenient for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

The current economic situation has prompted the provincial government to review its green transportation programmes and better address the public’s needs. One such programme under consideration is the Go Electric Passenger Vehicle Rebate Programme, which provides financial rebates to Canadians buying EVs. The initiative will continue until May 15, 2025, after which there will be a pause, according to the government.

The government is working in conjunction with automakers and car dealers to expand ZEV adoption. These dialogues are part of B.C.'s climate action initiative, CleanBC programmes.
