The final investment decision to construct Holland Hydrogen I was made by Shell Nederland B.V. and Shell Overseas Investments B.V., both subsidiaries of Shell plc. When Holland Hydrogen I is finally put into operation in 2025, it will be the largest renewable hydrogen plant in Europe.

The 200MW electrolyzer will be built on Rotterdam's Tweede Maasvlakte and will produce up to 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day. The electrolyzer will be powered by renewable energy from Shell's offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (noord).

The renewable hydrogen produced will be delivered to the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam via the HyTransPort pipeline1, replacing some of the grey hydrogen used in the refinery. This will help to decarbonize the facility's production of energy products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. As heavy-duty trucks enter the market and refueling networks expand, renewable hydrogen supply can be directed toward these to aid in the decarbonization of commercial road transport.

said Anna Mascolo, Shell's Executive Vice President of Emerging Energy Solutions.

"Renewable hydrogen will play a critical role in the future energy system, and this project is an important step toward helping hydrogen realise that potential."

Shell's ambition is to contribute to developing a global hydrogen economy by creating opportunities in the production, storage, transportation, and delivery of hydrogen to end users. The approval of Holland Hydrogen I is a significant step forward not only for the Netherlands, as a leader in the hydrogen economy, but also for Shell globally.
