Union Pacific Railroad bestowed its inaugural Sustainability Partner Award upon a dozen outstanding customers and suppliers, including WSP, a renowned consultancy specialising in engineering, environment, and professional services.
Jay Aber, WSP's Transportation Vice President and National Future Ready® Programme Lead, expressed pride in Union Pacific's acknowledgement, underscoring WSP's dedication to environmental and social stewardship.
Aber emphasised that WSP's corporate strategy centres on addressing sustainability, resilience, and social equity challenges. The firm's Future Ready approach positions clients like Union Pacific to navigate a dynamic world and contribute to a more equitable, inclusive, and net-zero future.
The awards ceremony took place on November 14 at the Union Pacific Center in Omaha, welcoming participants from Union Pacific's diverse customer and supplier base.
Union Pacific meticulously assessed each company's application, considering their sustainability initiatives and collaborative efforts with key stakeholders. The honour was accepted by Jay Aber and Eric Matzner, WSP's Vice President and Programme Director for Site Assessment and Remediation.
Beth Whited, President of Union Pacific, praised the awarded companies for sharing the railroad's commitment to sustainable business practices that positively impact communities, employees, and customers.
WSP's sustainability endeavours include crafting a net-zero emissions plan for the California High-Speed Rail Programme, earning an Envision Platinum Certification. Additionally, WSP collaborated with the city of Chicago on a Climate Action Plan targeting an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
WSP's commitment extends to collaborating with its suppliers on sustainability initiatives. The firm introduced a Low-Carbon Supplier Engagement Plan to encourage suppliers to align with WSP's climate ambition, incorporating science-based targets and a commitment to utilising 100% renewable electricity by 2030. Union Pacific, a Class I freight-hauling railroad operating in 23 western states, plays a pivotal role in connecting customers and communities to the global economy.
