Amtrak's recently released FY 2023 Sustainability Report outlines their progress toward achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2045.

This ambitious goal highlights their commitment to sustainable travel solutions.

“Passenger rail is widely recognized as one of the most sustainable modes of transportation, and we are taking steps to make rail even more attractive,” said Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner. “The emissions reductions already met, and climate goals set forth in the annual report underline our commitment to providing customers safe and reliable travel while further reducing our already-low carbon footprint.”

Key Achievements in Sustainability

  • Cleaner Fuel: Over 2 million gallons of fossil fuel were replaced with renewable diesel on California routes, slashing GHG emissions by 63%.

  • Reduced Waste: Disposable tableware was eliminated at Moynihan Train Hall's Metropolitan Lounge. This switch to in-house food prep and plating cut plastic use by 75%.

  • Electric on Rails: The first electric bus was added to the Pacific Northwest Cascades route, lowering annual GHG emissions by 109 metric tonnes.

  • Building for the Future: Resilient design guidelines are being developed for infrastructure projects, ensuring Amtrak's preparedness for changing climates.

Double Ridership, Double the Impact

Amtrak aims to connect more people through rail travel, to double ridership to 66 million by 2040. Their Climate Commitment strategies focus on sustainability and resilience to attract travellers seeking eco-friendly transportation.
