According to the report, since the technology for energy independence and renewable electricity already exists, it becomes easier for cities to obtain currently.

In the report, an example cited is of a smart city in Sudi Arabia named Neom, which the report says is the first to use technology fueled by data and interaction.

Neom in Sudi Arabia is a business zone and develops a zero-carbon city called the Line, which will be powered using 100% clean energy and spread across 105 miles. A 2-gigawatt electrolysis plant for green energy is also currently under construction in the zone.

Hydrogen will play a significant role in the future, which according to the report, will make up 21% of the technology needed for smart cities by 2042.

The report also highlights that the technologies will continue to update in areas, particularly that of batteries, where lithium-ion batteries might replace with more convenient and affordable sodium-ion and greener batteries.
