BIOCCUS Project in Sweden to Produce Electricity, Remove CO2

Highlights
- Aker Solutions signs MoU with Nordbex to develop BIOCCUS plants in Europe.
- Nordbex 1 facility will convert forestry waste into biofuel and capture CO2.
- Agreement grants Aker Solutions exclusivity on future BIOCCUS projects.
Aker Solutions has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Swedish climate-tech company Nordbex to develop BIOCCUS (bioenergy with carbon capture, use and storage) plants, which convert forestry waste into biofuel while capturing carbon dioxide (CO2).
Their association will bring Nordbex 1, Sweden’s first replicable BIOCCUS facility, into operation.
Under the terms of the MoU, Aker Solutions will handle project management, engineering, and EPCm services, while Nordbex will lead the project as the developer.

The facility is planned for the SE4 electricity region, with a launch set for the first half of 2029. It will generate electricity and heat for local communities, and at the same time remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
The partnership between the two companies began in 2023 when Aker Solutions’ consultancy arm, Entr, conducted engineering studies for Nordbex 1, which examined the combination of separate technologies.
The MoU now shifts gears in the collaboration and moves it to its next stage, which opens the way for future BIOCCUS plants.
The agreement grants Aker Solutions exclusivity on the next two plants developed by Nordbex and gives them the first option for subsequent projects.
According to Henrik Inadomi, executive vice president of New Energies at Aker Solutions, the project fits with their vision of sustainable and innovative energy solutions.

Carl Berglund, co-founder and CCO of Nordbex, said: “We’re proud to team up with Aker Solutions to deliver a new generation of BIOCCUS plants.
“While BIOCCUS has been a recognized method for removing carbon from the atmosphere for decades, Nordbex’s unique business model of building plants that are scalable, financeable, and set up for replication will ensure a maximum climate impact while generating income from the sale of stable electricity and heat as well as high-quality carbon removal certificates”
