Amsterdam's Hydryx Converts Landfill Methane into Green Energy

Highlights
- Hydryx pools €2.5 million to trap methane emissions from landfills as well as produce green energy.
- The methane management system increases landfill energy output by 40% and pares down greenhouse gas emissions.
Hydryx, an Amsterdam-based climate tech startup, has completed a €2.5 million seed round to diversify its operations in Europe.
The company deals with methane emissions from landfills, a greenhouse gas 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2).
Why do they zero in on methane emissions? Experts say that landfill methane has huge impact on the climate than the aviation and shipping sectors combined, yet most of it goes unused. By trapping this methane, landfills can become sources of green electricity, heat, or renewable natural gas, thereby converting an overlooked environmental problem into an economic opportunity.

Founders Anthonie Jacobson (CEO) and Joren Tangelder (COO) developed a methane management system that installs on landfill sites to trap methane before it escapes into the atmosphere.
The captured gas can then be used to produce green energy, which reduces emissions and also generates extra income for landfill operators. Tests with Dutch waste company Renewi showed that the system increases energy output by 40%, which prove that landfills can deliver both environmental and financial benefits.

The €2.5 million funding round was led by impact investor Marcel Smits and the Graduate Entrepreneur fund, joined by mission-driven angel investors.
Jacobson said, “Hydryx has the biggest ‘bang for your buck’ climate solution that I have seen,” said lead investor Marcel Smits. “This investment enables us to drastically reduce methane emissions across Europe; right now, when it matters most.”
