Amazon Clean Energy Purchase Expands Germany Offshore Wind Partnership with RWE

Takeaways
- Amazon signs a long-term clean energy purchase deal with RWE for 110 MW of offshore wind power in Germany.
- The offshore wind project will supply clean electricity equal to over 139,000 households annually.
- The agreement strengthens Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio and supports Germany’s decarbonisation goals.
Amazon has signed a long-term clean energy purchase deal with German utility RWE, securing 110 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity from the Nordseecluster offshore wind project in the North Sea. The agreement marks another step in the tech giant’s push to expand its renewable energy footprint while supporting Germany’s transition to a low-carbon power system.
Under the power purchase agreement (PPA), Amazon will source electricity generated by RWE’s large-scale offshore wind project. RWE said the contracted capacity is expected to produce enough clean electricity each year to supply the equivalent of more than 139,000 German households.
The deal builds on a broader Strategic Framework Agreement signed in June 2025 between the two companies. While RWE supports Amazon’s carbon-free energy objectives through renewable supply, Amazon is providing cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics services to accelerate RWE’s digital transformation.

Ulf Kerstin, Chief Commercial Officer at RWE Supply & Trading, said PPAs like this play a key role in driving Germany’s energy transition.
“Power Purchase Agreements like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonization while strengthening long-term security of supply,” Kerstin said. “By enabling large-scale offshore projects such as Nordseecluster, we can bring more reliable, carbon-free electricity onto the grid and support a resilient energy system.”
The Nordseecluster offshore wind project is being developed in two phases. Nordseecluster A, with a capacity of 660 MW, is currently under construction and is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027. A second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add another 900 MW and is expected to come online in 2029.
For Amazon, the agreement represents its fourth major offshore wind PPA in Germany. The company has steadily expanded its clean energy purchase commitments across the country. Combined with six on-site solar installations, Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio in Germany now totals about 790 MW of capacity.
Once all projects are operational, they are expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million German homes each year, according to the company.
Rocco Bräuniger, Amazon Country Manager for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, said the partnership aligns with the company’s broader climate targets.
“Germany is transitioning toward a modern, carbon-free energy system, and this agreement with RWE helps advance that vision,” he said. “As Amazon works toward net-zero carbon by 2040, we continue enabling projects that strengthen Germany’s renewable energy capacity for generations to come.”

The latest clean energy purchase underscores how corporate PPAs are becoming central to funding new renewable energy projects and helping companies meet sustainability goals. For both Amazon and RWE, the deal supports growth, grid reliability, and long-term decarbonization.
