SUISO, CGS Explore Underground Carbon Storage in South Africa

The project in South Africa is primed to reshape energy policies and regulations in the region.
Storing carbon underground helps industries continue their operations with reduced carbon emissions.
SUISO, a sustainable blue ammonia production facility in South Africa, has collaborated with the Council for Geoscience (CGS) to initiate underground carbon storage.
The partners will investigate South Africa's geological formations and find environmental solutions to store carbon emissions safely, which could help reduce industrial pollution. This association is pursuant to the country's clean energy transition strategy, the Just Energy Transition.
One of the goals is to provide energy security and speed up green hydrogen production. Capturing and storing carbon underground helps numerous industries continue their operations swimmingly and lower emissions. In addition, this project will prepare the ground for sustainable exploration of critical minerals in high demand for clean energy technologies.

The findings from this initiative will shape future energy policies and regulations and influence mining innovation. Today, many industries are under pressure to reduce their environmental impact, and underground carbon storage offers a potential solution to maintain industrial productivity sans hindering economic growth.
SUISO founder Paul Erskine, said: "We’re not waiting for external support to dictate our future. South Africa has the resources and expertise to drive its own sustainable energy solutions. This project is a critical step in that direction.
"Carbon capture is no longer an option, it’s a necessity. The SUISO/CGS joint venture lays the groundwork for a scalable solution to South Africa’s emissions challenge—while keeping industry operational and productive."
