Walmart's Sustainable Journey with Rubi Labs
Walmart Inc

Walmart has always been at the forefront of pushing boundaries and seeking innovative solutions. The company's unwavering commitment to asking, "What if?" has led to groundbreaking projects that challenge the impossible, such as the creation of affordable clothing from carbon emissions.
Teaming up with Rubi Laboratories, Walmart is embarking on pilot projects that aim to capture carbon emissions from manufacturers and facilities within their supply chain, transforming them into garment prototypes with zero waste.
The process witnessed firsthand during a tour of Rubi's facility seems almost magical, creating something valuable seemingly out of thin air. However, the science behind it is even more captivating.
Drawing inspiration from trees' natural carbon absorption capabilities, Rubi's founders, Neeka and Leila Mashouf, have developed a patent-pending process that mimics this phenomenon in the lab. Their innovative technology captures and converts carbon emissions, transforming them into carbon-negative, resource-neutral textiles ideal for clothing and various other materials.
For Walmart, fostering innovation is crucial to building supplier resilience and ensuring a consistent supply chain. With Walmart being the first company to initiate both manufacturing and brand pilot agreements with Rubi, the potential to reshape the apparel supply chain is unprecedented.
The manufacturing pilot will explore the integration of Rubi's technology on a larger scale within Walmart's supply chain, including testing carbon emission capture at some of Walmart's own facilities. The brand pilot, on the other hand, will assess Rubi's fibre performance in a prototype garment, aiming to produce garment samples and potentially launch a larger apparel collection available in Walmart stores.
Neeka Mashouf, co-founder and CEO of Rubi Labs, expresses excitement about partnering with Walmart, emphasising their shared goal of restoring Earth's ecological balance through reimagined supply chains. The ability of Walmart to mobilise positive impact across its diverse U.S. partners could significantly contribute to scaling up production and delivering on its commitments.
Sustainability is at the core of Walmart's endeavours, driven by the belief that its scale can create a positive impact wherever it operates. Moreover, they recognise that sustainability should also be affordable. As such, they are working on prototyping an apparel line that can be produced at scale and made widely available to customers who seek value and affordability in their purchases.
The potential of Rubi's technology goes far beyond apparel, with implications spanning various products and industries, from packaging and building materials to food and the creation of new raw materials. The possibilities are immense, and Walmart is determined to continue its journey towards becoming a regenerative company.
In the quest for a more sustainable and equitable future, Walmart is committed to making the sustainable choice affordable. Their dedication to tackling complex problems and finding innovative solutions throughout their supply chain promises a better environment for all. As Walmart and Rubi Labs forge ahead on this groundbreaking journey, the world eagerly anticipates the transformative impact they will have on sustainability and beyond.
