Clariant, a top specialty chemical company, reaffirms its dedication to sustainability and provides an update on its ESG objectives.

Clariant has achieved a 3% reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions over the last twelve months (April 2022 to March 2023), with emissions falling to 0.60 million tonnes from 0.62 million tonnes in the full year 2022.

Additionally, the company's Scope 3 indirect greenhouse gas emissions from purchased goods and services decreased by 5% during the same period, dropping from 2.58 million tonnes in the full year 2022 to 2.46 million tonnes. These results indicate that Clariant is making progress towards its emissions reduction targets for 2030.

The adoption of low-emission raw materials through various projects in 2022 has had a positive impact on Clariant's first quarter of 2023 and is expected to continue benefiting the Group in the future. Despite the inclusion of the acquired Attapulgite site in the US and the sunliquid® bioethanol plant in Romania, as well as additional sites in the reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Clariant anticipates that its full-year 2023 emissions will remain below the levels of the previous year.

Clariant is actively implementing its sustainability and innovation strategy across its portfolio, to lead the Group in this direction. One example of this approach is the launch of Rootness® Mood+, an advanced skincare ingredient in the Care Chemicals Business Unit.

This ingredient promotes a sustainable bio-economy by utilising Plant Milking Technology, a smart plant cultivation technique that ensures the host plant is not destroyed during the chemical production process. Compared to conventional methods, it requires 90% less water and provides Clariant's customers with seed-to-ingredient traceability.

Additionally, Clariant's Adsorbents & Additives Business Unit offers bio-based ingredients for paints and coatings with lower carbon footprints, which help customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions. Overall, Clariant's focus on sustainability is demonstrated through its commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions across its portfolio.
