Gamuda, a leading Malaysian builder, and Gentari, a clean energy solutions provider, have announced a partnership to develop about 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity.

The projects will be handled by their subsidiaries, Gamuda Energy and Gentari Renewables, and will focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants supported by battery energy storage systems (BESS). This combination will make the electricity supply more reliable and stable.

The aim of this initiative is to serve the increasing demand from hyperscale data centres in Malaysia.

These are massive facilities that power digital services, cloud computing, and online platforms. According to projections, by 2035, these data centres will require over 5 GW of dependable electricity, meaning there is an urgent need to increase renewable energy generation to keep pace with digital growth.

Gentari’s chief renewables officer, Low Kian Min, explained that Malaysia’s digital economy is expanding quickly, and to keep it sustainable, there must be a larger supply of clean and reliable power.

Gamuda Energy director, Joshua Kong, added that with their combined expertise and financial strength, they can create a steady pipeline of renewable energy projects. This will allow data centres to operate with a lower carbon footprint and reduce their environmental impact.
